If you are looking for something different from the usual Vietnamese iced coffee, you should try Vietnamese egg coffee. During my recent exploration of Saigon, I happened to stop by Little HaNoi Egg Coffee, a small and charming café in the heart of District 1. I came here to try their famous egg coffee and ended up discovering an interesting story behind one of Vietnam’s most unique coffee creations.

A Little Taste of Hanoi in the Heart of Saigon

Little HaNoi Egg Coffee is tucked away upstairs in an old building, giving the café a hidden and nostalgic feeling. As soon as I walked in, I could feel a very different atmosphere from the busy streets outside. The space is cozy, quiet, and has a vintage style that reminds me of old Hanoi.

One of my favorite parts of the café is the small balcony. From here, you can sit with your coffee and watch the busy streets of Saigon below. It is a simple experience, but it gives you a chance to slow down and enjoy the city from a different perspective.

What Is Vietnamese Egg Coffee?

Of course, the main reason I came here was to try Vietnamese egg coffee, one of the country’s most unusual and famous coffee creations.

At first glance, it may look more like a dessert than a cup of coffee. The drink is made with strong Vietnamese coffee topped with a layer of whipped egg yolk and sugar. The egg mixture is beaten until it becomes smooth, creamy, and almost mousse-like.

When you take a sip, you first taste the rich and slightly sweet egg cream, followed by the strong and slightly bitter Vietnamese coffee underneath. The combination might sound unusual, but the flavors work surprisingly well together.

How Was Egg Coffee Invented?

What makes egg coffee even more interesting is its history. The drink is widely associated with Hanoi and dates back to 1946, during a period when fresh milk was difficult to obtain.

According to the commonly told story, Nguyen Van Giang, who worked as a bartender at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, experimented with egg yolks and sugar as an alternative to milk. He whipped the egg yolks until they became creamy and combined them with strong Vietnamese coffee.

This simple idea eventually became what we now know as Vietnamese egg coffee. Over the decades, egg coffee became closely associated with Hanoi and developed into one of Vietnam’s most distinctive coffee experiences.

My Experience at Little HaNoi Egg Coffee

After trying the egg coffee at Little HaNoi Egg Coffee, I could understand why this drink has become so popular. The creamy egg topping is rich and smooth, while the strong coffee underneath provides a nice contrast.

What I particularly enjoyed was the combination of the drink and the atmosphere. Sitting on the balcony, watching the traffic move through the center of Saigon while enjoying a coffee inspired by Hanoi, felt like experiencing two different sides of Vietnam at the same time.
