The Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, an iconic landmark in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, was built in the late 1880s by French colonists and remains one of the most significant symbols of Catholicism in predominantly Buddhist Vietnam. Nestled in the charming Paris Square, it was named “Notre Dame” following the installation of the revered ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ statue in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican elevated its status to a basilica, officially naming it the Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica.
Standing nearly 60 meters tall, this magnificent structure boasts striking neo-Romanesque architecture, featuring an all-red brick façade imported from Marseille, stunning stained-glass windows, and two towering bell towers housing six grand bronze bells that continue to chime to this day. Encircled by a tranquil garden, this historic cathedral offers visitors a glimpse into Vietnam’s colonial past and serves as a peaceful retreat in the bustling heart of District 1.

Stop At: Central Post Office, 125 Hai Ba Trung, Ho Chi Minh City 70000 Vietnam
The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is a stunning architectural gem and one of the most well-preserved relics of French colonial history in Vietnam. Often regarded as the grandest post office in Southeast Asia, this iconic landmark stands proudly beside the Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, making it easy for visitors to explore both cultural treasures in one trip.
Designed by Alfred Foulhoux, the post office showcases a captivating blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and French colonial influences. Its elegant arched windows, intricate ironwork, and classic wooden shutters remain just as they were in the late 19th century, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the Indochinese Empire. Stepping inside, visitors are transported back in time, where history and heritage come to life in the heart of modern-day Ho Chi Minh City.

Stop At: The Independence Palace, 106 Nguyen Du District 1, Ho Chi Minh City 700000 Vietnam
Independence Palace was the base of Vietnamese General Ngo Dinh Diem until his death in 1963. It made its name in global history in 1975. A tank belonging to the North Vietnamese Army crashed through its main gate, ending the Vietnam War. Today, it’s a must-visit for tourists in Ho Chi Minh City. The palace is like a time capsule frozen in 1975. You can see two of the original tanks used in the capture of the palace parked in the grounds. Independence Palace was the home and workplace of the French Governor of Cochin-China. It has lush gardens, secret rooms, antique furniture, and a command bunker. It’s still in use to host important occasions in Ho Chi Minh, including APEC summits

Stop At: War Remnants Museum, 28 Vo Van Tan Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City 700000 Vietnam
The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, first opened to the public in 1975, stands as a powerful and sobering reminder of the Vietnam War’s harrowing impact. Originally named the “Museum of American War Crimes,” it presents a stark and unfiltered account of the conflict, offering visitors an eye-opening perspective on one of the most devastating wars of the 20th century.

Through its graphic photographic exhibitions and an extensive collection of American military artifacts, the museum brings history to life. Among its displays are a helicopter armed with rocket launchers, a battle tank, a fighter jet, and a single-seat attack aircraft—all once deployed on Vietnamese soil. One of the most striking exhibits is a 6,800kg conventional bomb, a chilling testament to the sheer scale of warfare between 1945 and 1975.

Stop At: The Thích Quảng Đức Monument, 185 Cach Mang Thang Tam, Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, 700000 Vietnam
The Thích Quảng Đức Monument in Ho Chi Minh City stands as a poignant tribute to Venerable Thích Quảng Đức, a Buddhist monk who self-immolated in 1963 to protest the persecution of Buddhists under the South Vietnamese government. Located at the intersection of Cách Mạng Tháng Tám and Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Streets, this powerful memorial features a bronze statue of the monk, seated in meditation as flames rise around him—a reminder of his unwavering commitment to religious freedom and peace.
Surrounded by a small, peaceful garden, the site offers visitors a moment of reflection on Vietnam’s tumultuous history and the courage of those who stood for their beliefs. The monument is a significant stop for those seeking to understand the deeper layers of Ho Chi Minh City’s past beyond its colonial landmarks and war history.

Stop At: Phố Tau Sai Gon (Chợ Lớn Quận 5), Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City’s Cholon is Vietnam’s largest Chinatown with roots dating back to 1778; it’s also a place of great historical and cultural importance. Chinese minorities hid here from the Tay Son and subsequently had to rebuild the area twice following attack with as many as 70% estimated to have died trying to escape on boats. Those who survived settled and began selling a variety of Chinese products. During the Vietnam War Cholon was a thriving black market for US soldiers trading in American Army issue supplies. The area today is a popular site for those on the tourist trail and also attracts many Taiwanese and Chinese visitors. Cholon is an interesting place to see classical Chinese architecture reminiscent of years gone by with plenty of Chinese restaurants. The Binh Tay market at the centre is busy, crowded and messy with small aisles selling all manner of goods. It’s a wonderful place to experience at night.
